Exalted Ruler

The Exalted Ruler serves as the chief executive officer of a local Elks Lodge, comparable to a president in other organizations. This prestigious position carries significant responsibilities defined in the Constitution and Statutes of the Order.
Key Responsibilities
According to Section 12.020 of the Grand Lodge Statutes, the Exalted Ruler:
Presides at all meetings of the Lodge
Appoints all committees provided for in Section 13.020
Appoints acting officers when needed
Enforces the Laws of the Order
Attends all District Deputy Clinics unless excused
Signs all approved vouchers alongside the Secretary
Article V, Section 2 of the typical Lodge By-Laws defines the Exalted Ruler as "the Executive Officer of the Lodge" who serves as "an ex-officio non-voting member of the Board of Trustees" in unincorporated Lodges.
Leadership
As explained in the Officer's Guide, the Exalted Ruler "cannot do this alone. The task will test your ability to effectively enlist the aid of others. You must delegate responsibility, and this involves selecting the right people and having confidence in their performances. Then your function is supervising — insisting on action and monitoring results."
The position of Exalted Ruler represents both honor and responsibility. Through proper leadership, the Exalted Ruler ensures the Lodge carries forward the principles of Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love and Fidelity while effectively managing Lodge affairs and representing the Lodge at Grand Lodge sessions.
