Hoop Shoot

The Elks Hoop Shoot is one of the nation's largest and most prestigious free throw competitions for youth ages 8-13. Sponsored by the Elks National Foundation, this program provides boys and girls the opportunity to compete, connect, and succeed through the values of hard work and healthy competition. Mississippi Elks Lodges conduct local contests that advance winners through district, state, and regional levels, ultimately sending our state's best shooters to the National Finals. Beyond developing basketball skills, the Hoop Shoot builds character, promotes sportsmanship, and creates lasting memories for participants and their families, exemplifying the Elks' commitment to helping young people reach their full potential.

Program Details and Activities

The Elks Hoop Shoot® is a free throw contest for youth ages 8-13 and one of the nation's largest and most visible youth sports programs. Since 1972, this program has provided boys and girls across our state the opportunity to compete in a healthy, character-building competition that emphasizes the values of hard work and perseverance.

Through the dedication of our state committee and local Lodge volunteers, the Hoop Shoot® program engages youth in a progressive competition that begins at the local level and can advance all the way to national finals. Our structured program includes:

  • Local Lodge contests held between December and January each year

  • District competitions for local Lodge winners

  • State championships crowning our state's best free throw shooters

  • Regional contests featuring champions from multiple states

  • National Finals showcasing the top 72 shooters in the country

  • Recognition in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame for national champions

The Hoop Shoot® program is fully funded by the Elks National Foundation, allowing all youth to participate at no cost. Our state coordinator works closely with local Lodges to ensure contests are properly organized and conducted according to national guidelines.

Beyond basketball skills, the Hoop Shoot® teaches valuable life lessons about sportsmanship, goal-setting, and the pursuit of excellence. Many participants have gone on to successful athletic and professional careers, crediting the program with helping develop their confidence and competitive spirit.
