Mediator
Mediator
Appointed by the Exalted Ruler from the Lodge or another Lodge, the Mediator conducts mandatory informal mediation sessions between accusers and accused members before any Local Forum complaint can be filed, working to resolve disputes outside the formal judicial process (G.L.S. 8.015).
Key Responsibilities
According to Section 13.020 of the Grand Lodge Statutes, the Mediator:
Is appointed by the Exalted Ruler at the first meeting after his installation
May be selected from his or another Lodge
Cannot be the same individual as a Local Forum Justice
Is assigned by the Exalted Ruler to specific cases as needed
The Mediator serves as an alternative dispute resolution mechanism within the Lodge structure, providing a voluntary mediation process for resolving conflicts between Lodge members before formal charges are filed. Per Section 16.041 opinions, "a mediation of a supervising or managing body complaint does not violate Grand Lodge Statutes provided the mediation is voluntary. Once mediation is completed, and one or both parties have substantially performed the terms of the mediation agreement, any further complaints regarding the same incident between the same parties are invalid."
The Mediator position allows for informal resolution of disputes while maintaining the integrity of the formal judicial process through the Local Forum system.
