The Esteemed Lecturing Knight serves as the fourth-ranking chair officer in an Elks Lodge, following the Exalted Ruler, Esteemed Leading Knight, and Esteemed Loyal Knight. This position completes the quartet of chair officers and carries distinct responsibilities in Lodge operations.

Key Responsibilities

According to Section 12.040 of the Grand Lodge Statutes, the Esteemed Lecturing Knight:

  • Assists the Exalted Ruler in performing their duties

  • Officiates for the Exalted Ruler in their absence, when both the Leading Knight and Loyal Knight are also absent

  • Is invested with the Exalted Ruler's powers and prerogatives when acting in that capacity

  • Performs other duties required by the Laws of the Order and Lodge By-Laws

Leadership

As the fourth chair officer, the Lecturing Knight position typically represents the entry point into the progressive line of officers that may lead to eventual service as Exalted Ruler, providing valuable experience in Lodge leadership.
The Esteemed Lecturing Knight plays an important role in maintaining Lodge traditions while developing the leadership skills necessary for future advancement within the officer ranks.
