This is for all aspects of the Lodge, but applies most heavily to House since they tend to have the most employees.

House Committee Handbook

This is a must read for any new House Committee Chairs.

When appointed by the Exalted Ruler (3-13 members as specified in By-Laws), this committee manages and supervises the club, social parlor, or other Lodge facilities, including setting prices, managing employment relationships, and having authority to suspend members from club privileges for up to one year (G.L.S. 16.040(c)). Note that some Lodges may use alternative management methods such as the Board of Directors/Trustees directly managing club operations, or establishing a separate corporation to oversee facilities, as permitted under G.L.S. 16.040.
The House Committee operates under strict Lodge oversight, with all actions subject to Lodge control except employment decisions and pricing of goods and services, and must provide monthly financial reports and annual budgets to the Lodge for approval.

Key Responsibilities

Please check your local bylaws to see which House Management system your lodge runs. This covers the House Commitee System.

According to Section 16.040 of the Grand Lodge Statutes, the House Committee:

  • Consists of not fewer than 3 or more than 13 members appointed by the Exalted Ruler

  • Manages, supervises, and controls the club, social parlor, or other Lodge facilities

  • Operates subject to Lodge control except for employment relationships and price-setting

  • Holds at least one regular meeting monthly and keeps minutes of all meetings

  • Presents comprehensive budgets to the Lodge by the final April meeting

  • Submits monthly written reports comparing financial condition to budget

  • Has power to suspend Members from club privileges for up to one year under Section 16.041

Per Grand Forum decisions, House Committee members "serve at the pleasure of the Exalted Ruler and may be removed by him at any time, with or without cause." The House Committee serves as the operational management body for the Lodge's business activities while remaining accountable to the Lodge membership.

Leadership

This committee provides valuable leadership development through focused expertise in a specialized area of Lodge operations. This committee role allows members to develop project management skills, learn to work effectively with diverse groups, and gain experience in planning and executing Lodge activities. The Chair's responsibility for coordinating committee members and reporting to the Lodge develops communication and organizational abilities that translate well to future service in higher Lodge positions. This specialized focus helps build the member's reputation within the Lodge while contributing meaningfully to its mission and goals.
