Drug Awareness

The mission of the Elks Drug Awareness Program is to empower America's youth and their families through education about the dangers of illegal drug use and the abuse of legalized and prescription drugs. As the largest volunteer drug awareness program in the United States, we serve as vigilant guardians of our nation's future by promoting a drug-free lifestyle through community-based initiatives. Since 1982, our nationwide network of dedicated Elks volunteers has partnered with federal agencies and national organizations to develop effective prevention programs that address current substance abuse challenges. By taking pride in America's communities and youth, we provide tools, resources, and inspiration that enable young people to make healthy choices. Because we believe that the youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow, we are committed to ensuring they grow up in a drug-free environment—demonstrating once again that Elks Care and Elks Share.

Our Team.

The Drug Awareness Program within the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks operates under the direction of the Activities Committee as mandated by Grand Lodge Statutes, providing educational resources and prevention initiatives designed to help youth resist substance abuse and make healthy lifestyle choices.

Program Details and Activities

The Elks Drug Awareness Program (DAP) is the largest volunteer drug awareness program in the United States. Created in 1983, our program focuses on educating youth and their families about the dangers of illegal drug use and the importance of living a drug-free life.

Through the dedicated efforts of our state and local Lodge volunteers, the Elks DAP distributes age-appropriate educational materials to schools, organizes drug-free activities, and creates awareness about the dangers of drug use. Our comprehensive approach includes:

  • Educational literature and materials for students of all ages

  • Video resources for classroom and community use

  • Red Ribbon Week activities each October

  • Drug awareness contests including poster, essay, and video competitions

  • Partnerships with schools and community organizations

  • "Elks Kid Zone" website featuring games and activities that promote drug-free choices

The DAP is funded primarily through grants from the Elks National Foundation, allowing materials to be provided free of charge to schools, teachers, and parents. Our state coordinators work closely with local Lodges to ensure resources reach those who need them most.

To request materials or learn how your school can participate in our drug awareness initiatives, please contact your local Elks Lodge or our State Drug Awareness Program Chairman.

Join us in our mission to help America's youth make healthy choices and live drug-free lives!
